Journey 1: The Heart of the Piedmont

The Piedmont region of North Carolina is a vibrant tapestry of rolling hills, lush forests, and thriving cities. The Tar Heel Traveler begins its journey in the heart of the Piedmont, the city of Greensboro. Greensboro is a city with a rich history and a vibrant culture. The International Civil Rights Center and Museum tells the story of the Greensboro sit-ins, a pivotal moment in the civil rights movement. The Weatherspoon Art Museum houses a renowned collection of American and international art. And the Greensboro Science Center is a fun and educational destination for all ages.

From Greensboro, the Tar Heel Traveler continues its journey through the Piedmont, visiting the historic towns of Winston-Salem, High Point, and Lexington. Winston-Salem is home to the Old Salem Museums & Gardens, a living history museum that recreates the Moravian community that founded the city. High Point is the furniture capital of the world, and the Tar Heel Traveler takes a behind-the-scenes tour of a furniture factory. And Lexington is known for its barbecue, and no visit to the Piedmont would be complete without a taste of Lexington-style barbecue.

Journey 2: The Blue Ridge Mountains

The Blue Ridge Mountains are a hiker's paradise, with miles of trails winding through lush forests and past cascading waterfalls. The Tar Heel Traveler heads to the Blue Ridge Mountains to hike the Appalachian Trail, the longest hiking trail in the world. The Appalachian Trail stretches from Georgia to Maine, and the Tar Heel Traveler hikes a portion of the trail that runs through North Carolina. Along the way, the Tar Heel Traveler encounters stunning views, challenging terrain, and a sense of accomplishment that only comes from conquering a mountain.

In addition to hiking, the Tar Heel Traveler also explores the other attractions of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Blue Ridge Parkway is a scenic highway that winds through the mountains, and the Tar Heel Traveler takes a drive along the parkway, stopping at overlooks to enjoy the breathtaking views. The Tar Heel Traveler also visits the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that is home to a diverse array of plant and animal life.

Journey 3: The Outer Banks

The Outer Banks is a chain of barrier islands that stretches along the coast of North Carolina. The Outer Banks are known for their beautiful beaches, their rich history, and their unique culture. The Tar Heel Traveler heads to the Outer Banks to explore this special place.

The Tar Heel Traveler begins its journey on the Outer Banks in the town of Kitty Hawk. Kitty Hawk is the site of the Wright brothers' first successful airplane flight, and the Tar Heel Traveler visits the Wright Brothers National Memorial to learn more about the history of aviation. From Kitty Hawk, the Tar Heel Traveler continues its journey south, visiting the towns of Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, and Hatteras Village. Along the way, the Tar Heel Traveler enjoys swimming, sunbathing, and surfing at the beautiful beaches of the Outer Banks.

Journey 4: The Coastal Plain

The Coastal Plain is the easternmost region of North Carolina, and it is home to a diverse landscape of forests, wetlands, and farms. The Tar Heel Traveler heads to the Coastal Plain to explore this unique region.

The Tar Heel Traveler begins its journey in the Coastal Plain in the city of Wilmington. Wilmington is a historic city with a thriving arts and culture scene. The Tar Heel Traveler visits the USS North Carolina Battleship Museum, which is a floating museum that tells the story of the USS North Carolina, a battleship that served in World War II and the Korean War. The Tar Heel Traveler also visits the Cameron Art Museum, which houses a collection of American and international art. And the Tar Heel Traveler takes a boat tour of the Cape Fear River, which is a vital waterway for the city of Wilmington.

From Wilmington, the Tar Heel Traveler continues its journey through the Coastal Plain, visiting the towns of New Bern, Greenville, and Elizabeth City. New Bern is the oldest city in North Carolina, and the Tar Heel Traveler visits the Tryon Palace, a historic mansion that was once the home of the royal governor of North Carolina. Greenville is a university town, and the Tar Heel Traveler visits the East Carolina University campus. And Elizabeth City is a coastal town, and the Tar Heel Traveler takes a ferry ride to the nearby Roanoke Island, which is home to the Lost Colony, an outdoor drama that tells the story of the first English colony in America.

The Tar Heel Traveler series of journeys offers a unique and unforgettable way to experience the rich history, diverse culture, and breathtaking natural beauty of North Carolina. From the bustling streets of Charlotte to the serene beaches of the Outer Banks, from the majestic Blue Ridge Mountains to the fertile Piedmont, the Tar Heel Traveler takes readers on an adventure that will stay with them long after their journey is over.
