In the summer of 1969, over 400,000 people gathered in Bethel, New York, for a three-day music festival that would become a symbol of peace, love, and the counterculture movement. Woodstock was conceived by four young men—Michael Lang, Artie Kornfeld, Joel Rosenman, and John Roberts—who were looking to create a "happening" that would celebrate the music and culture of the time. They chose the name Woodstock after the town where the festival was originally supposed to be held (although it was eventually moved to Bethel due to permit issues).

The festival lineup was a who's who of rock and roll, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Santana, Janis Joplin, Creedence Clearwater Revival, and Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young. The music was only part of the story, however. Woodstock was also a place where people could come together to express their ideals and protest against the Vietnam War. The festival became a symbol of the counterculture movement, which rejected the materialism and conformity of mainstream society.
