Materials you'll need:

  • Yarn: Worsted weight yarn in two colors (approximately 200 yards of each color)
  • Knitting needles: Size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Gauge:

18 stitches and 24 rows in stockinette stitch = 4 inches

Pattern Instructions:

Body:

  1. Using worsted weight yarn in color A, cast on 96 stitches.
  2. Join to work in the round, being careful not to twist the stitches.
  3. Knit 24 rounds in stockinette stitch (knit every row).

Fins:

  1. Divide the stitches into quarters, marking the beginning of each quarter with a stitch marker.
  2. On the first quarter, knit 2 stitches, place a marker, knit 14 stitches, place a marker, knit 2 stitches.
  3. Repeat this process on the remaining three quarters.
  4. Continue knitting in stockinette stitch, but only knitting the stitches between the markers. The stitches outside the markers will be the fins.
  5. Knit 10 rounds.

Tail:

  1. Leave the stitches between the last two markers on a stitch holder.
  2. Join a new piece of worsted weight yarn in color B to the live stitches on the first marker.
  3. Knit 20 stitches.
  4. Bind off all stitches.

Assembly:

  1. Sew the tail to the back of the body.
  2. Sew the fins to the sides of the body.
  3. Embroider or sew on eyes.
